Safari will automatically uncompress any type of archive file, zip, rar, gz, etc. Instead of the compressed file you end up with the contents of the archive.
How to Fix Safari
Open Safari and in the menu bar click Preferences.
Select the “General” tab and uncheck “Open ‘safe’ files after downloading”
